What is CSA?
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and is a unique and fun way for local consumers to connect to local farmers. CSA is a relationship between a farm (us), and the local community -you! CSA members make a commitment to support the farm through their annual membership and participation in seasonal shares. This commitment ensures the survival of local agriculture by sharing the bounty as well as the risk of the farm. Members can see firsthand how and where the produce is being grown and meet the farmers who are responsible for growing the food. CSA also helps develop a regional food supply, supports the local economy, maintains a sense of community, encourages land stewardship and reduces our carbon footprint by greatly decreasing the amount of energy that used to ship produce nationwide.
By joining you become an active part of the farm's success and community.
CSA at Osage Gardens
At Osage Gardens we will be offering year round Seasonal CSA Programs –Spring, Summer and Fall / Winter. Each season will run for a different length of time and the produce available will vary slightly based on what is seasonally available. However, one of our advantages is that a significant amount of growing space is under greenhouse cover which allows us to considerably extend our growing season and offer fresh greens and vegetables through the winter season. Since Osage Gardens is certified organic, your vegetables are not only fresh and local, they are also organic.
How does the CSA work?
People who are interested in joining the CSA first become members by paying the membership fee and then pay for their share prior to the season start. This helps the cash flow of the farm signifgantly as we can afford the pre season supplies and labor that it takes to get the growing season started.
Members will then come pick up their weekly allotment of vegetables during the allocated time. The cost of the Season varies depending on the number of weeks and the amount and variety of produce we are planning to offer. For example:
Spring 2010 March 10th - May 19th - 11 weeks - One Share Size $275 total $25 a week
Winter 2009 December 1st - March 2nd 10 weeks total -One Share Size $250
$25 a week
Members will then come pick up their weekly allotment of vegetables during the allocated time. We have three pick up options for the summer of 2010, in Glenwood Springs on Tuesday evenings, at the farm on Wednesday evenings and in Carbondale on Thursday evenings. There is an additional pickup fee for any non farm pickup options. The fee covers not only the gas for driving and keeping the truck cool, but also the additional labor and materials required to package up the shares.
At the farm the produce is layed out on a table market style. There will be signs indicating how much of each item you get that week. Please bring your own bags or boxes to place the produce into, both large containers and small produce bags for things like salad mix or spinach.
At the Glenwood and Carbondale Pickups, the produce will be pre-devided and boxed. Please bring your own large bags or containers to transfer the produce into.
